Don't know what you mean by clear the decks. Stop writing? That ain't going to happen. And not sure that would help the good writers. Might hurt. After all, the more bad writing the industry gets, the better you're going to look.
That was unclear, sorry. I simply meant that the field (or deck, if you will, not to mix my metaphors) seems very crowded. I was thinking this might possibly make it difficult for the powers-that-be to spot the cleverest writers. But I take your point. A little contrast can also be a good thing.
You have to be clever to write a backstory. Of course you have to be clever to write any story

I agree with you more than I agree with me : ) Editors have told me they are inundated with substandard work, slowing them down.
